Meet Our Marathon Man

Fairmead Sixth Former Connor Hyde has raised a fantastic £505 for school play equipment by running the Yeovil Half Marathon on Mother’s Day.

Connor is a keen athlete and sportsman who will be leaving us to go to Yeovil College to train as a sports coach at the end of this summer term. Connor decided to turn his love of running into a legacy for the school by using his marathon sponsorship money to buy a new basket swing.IMG_2817Connor said: ‘I ran the half marathon last year with Mr Dennis, but he ran a bit slow and our finishing time was 2 hours 30 minutes. This year, I wanted to beat that and I did by running it in 1 hour 59 minutes. I felt really good about it; I didn’t get any blisters and it was not a struggle. I trained once a week at the Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Track at Mudford Rec with mum watching me. I was really pleased with my time this year and I got a medal to say that I had completed it, but I want to try and beat it next year.

‘After the marathon I just had a good relax and ate my roast pork Sunday lunch. Thank you to everyone who sponsored me’.

Connor is not one to rest on his laurels and has already committed to take part in the disability sports tournament at The Royal Bath and West Show. Connor is a member of the Lynx Wheelchair Basketball team that trains at Bucklers Mead school every Friday evening (see previous posts), and will be playing at the show. He is also taking part in javelin throwing, shot put, table tennis, skittles, bowls and possibly tennis. Good luck Connor!
